These characteristics are essentially determined by the varieties contained in seed mixtures for reseeding and new sowing. Due to the specific characteristics of the inner Alpine climate, domestically bred and propagated varieties have outstanding value, which is impressively confirmed by the trials of the national variety evaluation program. It is therefore of utmost importance to ensure and maintain sufficient production and supply of these species/varieties to the seed market, as well as to improve the economic efficiency of seed production.
An increase in the economic viability of production, whether through higher yields, improved efficiency, or cost reduction, will enhance the attractiveness of these crops and rekindle interest among professionally qualified farmers. To integrate modern seeding technology, efficient weed control, and state-of-the-art production, harvesting, and cleaning techniques into the production processes of individual species/varieties, extensive trials and adequate support for seed producers are urgently needed to improve specific production processes. Furthermore, improved, more economical production systems for organic seed production must be developed. Currently, due to insufficient profitability, a rapidly increasing demand is met by a negligible supply of Austrian varieties.
