Animal genetic resources and bio-agendas

The Austrian National Society for Genetic Resources (ÖNGENE) is the national hub for animal genetic resources in Austria. This scientific platform brings together research, animal breeding, and private gene conservation breeding programs to jointly develop solutions for the conservation breeding of rare livestock breeds.

The technical proposals serve as a basis for the Ministry of Agriculture's "Rare Breeds" measure within the framework of the Austrian Programme for Environmentally Sound Agriculture (ÖPUL).

Since 1998, the management of ÖNGENE has been located at the Institute for Organic Agriculture and Biodiversity of Farm Animals.
