Investigation of feeding concepts for location-appropriate milk production in Austria

Society and politics want or even demand more regional and sustainable agricultural production. When it comes to sustainability, Austrian agriculture is one of the pioneers in Europe. With regard to regional production, there are more and more small regional initiatives, but a concept for the entire Austrian agriculture is still missing. The aim of this scientific project is to investigate location-appropriate feeding concepts for dairy farmers in mountain areas and in favorable locations in order to do justice to the ideas of society and politics.

In this project, we want to try to use only the farm's own feed and only buy a small proportion of silage maize or concentrated feed. However, the concentrated feed must have been produced in Austria. The aim is to ensure that the dairy cows are supplied with all the necessary nutrients in a balanced manner and in a balanced manner.

Different feeding concepts are required for Austria due to the different availability of the company's own arable feed. That is why feeding concepts for mountain areas and favorable locations investigated. The goals of limited concentrated feed purchases and a balanced nutrient supply to the animals mean that hardly any protein concentrated feed is purchased, especially in mountain areas with little or no arable land. The use of protein concentrates is primarily intended for farms in favorable locations which, due to the favorable location conditions, are able to feed comparatively high proportions of silage maize and energy concentrates.

Due to the different availability of arable feed, there are different performance targets for mountain areas and favorable locations. sustainable and animal-friendly dairy farming it is necessary to adapt the animal genetics to the different feed bases and performance goals. When implementing the feeding concepts, the animal performance of the dairy cows is also examined.

The results are intended to provide farmers with recommendations for action for the implementation of a sustainable and regional dairy farming. It should also provide information about new perspectives for Austrian milk production in order to preserve rural, regional agriculture in the long term and ensure the supply of high-quality food.
