Environmental ecology

In light of climate change and the biodiversity crisis, the conservation of bogs and peatlands plays a crucial role. The restoration of formerly drained peatland areas for agricultural and forestry use, alongside the renaturation of disturbed bogs, is a specific objective in the current draft of the EU Restoration Act.

The project will address the following research questions:

  • What indicators can be identify degraded peatlands
  • Where are these areas located?
  • From a technical point of view, where are suitable locations for a promising, lasting rewetting project , and what is their area size?

The research project was applied for and approved by the Biodiversity Fund (C321085, MOIST). The project consortium consists of experts from several institutions.
