The cultivation of silage maize in Austria is widespread, from the Alpine foothills and the pre-Alpine region to the valleys and basins of the Alpine area.
The composition of silage maize—the high-fiber plant matter on the one hand and the energy-rich cob on the other—gives this crop a very special place in animal feed. Furthermore, due to its easily digestible carbohydrates and low protein content, silage maize has excellent ensiling properties, which generally result in high-quality maize silage.
Feeding silage maize provides farmers with an energy-rich forage that, because of its high digestibility, guarantees high feed intake.
The quality of the maize silage is influenced by the variety, location, weather conditions, and the stage of development at harvest. Not only breeding, but also the soil and climatic conditions affect the quality of the maize silage.
