EIP Project SaLuT – Clean air in animal production

High emissions and resulting immissions regularly lead to conflicts with local residents and pose the challenge for Austrian livestock farming to develop environmentally friendly and at the same time animal welfare-oriented husbandry systems.

The EIP project SaLuT aims to reduce ammonia (NH3₎and odor emissions in pig fattening. The focus is on the development and testing of the first low-emission, animal-welfare-oriented barn for fattening pigs in Austria, breaking entirely new ground technically in the areas of animal husbandry and emissions.

Key areas

The project, in collaboration with partners from the EIP-AGRI network, will focus on the following key areas:

Reduction of ammonia, dust and odor pollution in animal production and development of quantifiable statements on emission reduction potentials
Improving animal welfare in pig fattening farms
Resolving existing or preventing future conflicts of interest with local residents and animal rights activists
Medium- to long-term safeguarding of self-sufficiency in pork in Austria

Outlook and potential

The project will develop scientifically sound statements regarding the emission reduction potential of best practice examples in pig farming. Furthermore, it will present practical implementation options for the NEC Directive in the animal production sector. Recommendations for appropriate funding measures will support the widespread adoption of the new technology and create investment incentives.

By actively involving stakeholders in the pig farming sector, the developed production systems are optimized and positioned as a sustainable alternative. Approaches to improved animal husbandry and the quantification of emission reductions are intended to help avoid future conflicts of interest with animal rights activists and local residents. Ultimately, the innovations necessary for the continued existence and further development of small-scale, domestic pig farming are highlighted.
