Bird damage poses a difficult problem to control in organic farming. Especially during the period between sowing and germination, freshly sown crops such as maize, sunflowers, and grain legumes are particularly vulnerable to bird damage, with the young seedlings being a preferred food source for these pest birds.

These birds can belong to a wide variety of species, such as crows, pigeons, pheasants, starlings, jays, and others. Bird deterrents can be achieved with acoustic or visual deterrents, seed treatments approved for organic farming, diversionary feeding, or appropriate agronomic measures. Sowing the seeds slightly deeper makes them more difficult for birds to access; however, this also means the seeds will take a little longer to germinate. Hilling the seeds after sowing can also prevent them from being quickly pecked out, as it provides a deeper layer of soil.

The previous project already addressed questions regarding bird damage to various seed treatments permitted in organic farming; this project aims to explore this issue in greater depth. Field trials with seed treatments will be conducted, and observations will be made and documented using a kite. Of course, it is also possible that no pest birds will be present at the time of germination, and therefore no observations will be possible.
