Conservation breeding of site-appropriate species

To ensure a competitive grassland farming sector in the Alpine region, independent forage plant breeding is being carried out at the HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein, tailored to the climatic and structural characteristics of these areas.

Particular emphasis is placed on species and variety characteristics that are especially important for grassland farming in harsher locations. Alongside satisfactory yield and high forage quality, persistence and disease resistance are the key breeding objectives. In Austria, a large proportion of seed consumption can thus be covered by varieties specifically adapted to the particular climate and management conditions.

The parallel development of a high-quality seed mixture segment, which has been exceptionally well received by grassland farmers, also ensures the continuous sale of high-quality domestic production (ÖAG quality mixtures). This allows for a propagation and pricing policy that can react much more slowly to the usual fluctuations of the global market than would be the case with purchased or licensed foreign varieties. The high potential demand for organically produced seed suggests possibilities for expanding the production area.
