Ways to control bird damage in different arable crops in organic farming

The aim of this scientific work is to address the problem of bird predation, which plays a significant role in organic farming, using suitable methods. The major problem is that there are hardly any permitted seed treatments in organic farming that can be used to combat bird predation.

The damage caused by birds to a wide variety of crops is considerable, affecting both the germination stage and mature crops. Particularly vulnerable are remote fields and crops that are rare in a given area. Fields near settlements appear to be less at risk, although there is often an increase in pigeons and house sparrows in these areas. A wide variety of bird species are found, including songbirds, pigeons, crows, pheasants, and others. Crows and pigeons, which descend on fields in large flocks, cause particularly severe damage. Some of these birds are game birds, while others are not, with jurisdiction depending on the individual federal states. This scientific project plans to cultivate various crops especially susceptible to bird damage on a large scale, using different seed treatments permitted in organic farming. These treatments include gall, liquid manure with rock dust, food coloring, and cinnamon oil. The control plot will be surrounded by diversionary feeding. The two stations belonging to the Department of Crop Production, Moarhof (maize) and Lambach (sunflowers), are planned as locations. At the Moarhof site, a field called the Pheasant Field is particularly suitable for 2008 because it is relatively secluded and located some distance from the institute building. Regular inspection of the field for potential feeding damage will determine the extent of bird predation. In Lambach, the sunflower field is also not in the immediate vicinity of the experimental station, making bird predation very likely. There, several sunflower variants will be tested side-by-side, ideally cultivated using machinery. Monitoring at the ripening stage is more difficult. Damage to sunflowers begins as early as flowering, but the extent varies considerably. Surveys that clearly demonstrate the differences between the individual variants will suffice to determine the effectiveness of one variant over another. These initial findings could lead to further scientific research on this topic if promising results are achieved with some of the variants examined here.
