According to international recommendations for gene banks, the camp is divided into a short-term and a long-term camp. While the long-term storage serves as a safeguard for the genetic survival of a breed in the event of a disaster (epidemics, natural disasters) and is used as a genetic archive for scientific purposes, the seed depot from the short-term storage is available to the breeding organizations responsible for the respective breed for targeted mating. Targeted mating is an important tool in the maintenance breeding of highly endangered livestock breeds. Artificial insemination is a good complement to keeping sires on farms.
In addition to the gene bank for endangered breeds, a comprehensive documentation archive of the cattle breeds is created by storing the sperm of each test animal in an Austrian insemination station. This archive is reserved for scientific use.
