Arbuscular mycorrhiza (AM) in grassland farming and landscaping

Within the framework of the EU project FAIR CT98-4024 “Seed Propagation of Indigenous Species and their Use for Restoration of Eroded Alpine Areas” (coordinator Dr. Bernhard Krautzer), the effect of inoculated VAM without accompanying fertilization was also investigated at 7 locations on different source material and at different altitudes throughout the Alpine arc, in comparison to the currently common revegetation methods.

The results of the first two years of the study show a surprisingly good performance of these variants, especially in combination with the use of site-appropriate seed mixtures. A quantitative and qualitative analysis of VAM colonization of the roots of the different variants at an initial trial site should provide information about the actual effect of inoculated VAM.
