Alpine turf for high altitudes

At altitudes above the tree line, successful and sustainable revegetation after construction work is currently only possible with the use of site-appropriate alpine seed mixtures. This also requires the use of high-quality revegetation techniques.

Due to the extreme weather conditions at high altitudes, vegetation grows very slowly and needs at least two growing seasons to ensure sufficient erosion protection.

Smaller-scale interventions may be necessary repeatedly well into autumn. The ability to establish rapid, site-appropriate, and long-lasting vegetation with immediate, 100% erosion control is paramount. However, this can only be achieved by using vegetation components that include climatically adapted grasses and herbs. Such material is either unavailable or only available in small quantities from natural sites.

This problem has been addressed for several years as part of a strategic partnership. The solution lies in the production of alpine turf for various locations. This turf consists of alpine grasses that can survive under extreme alpine conditions at altitudes of up to 2,500 meters. Suitable ecotypes were combined into mixtures for acidic and alkaline soils, and their suitability for producing finished alpine turf was tested. Large-scale production has been underway for two years.

The properties and positive effects of alpine turf were scientifically monitored in several trials. The positive effects of the site-appropriate vegetation, particularly regarding immediate and long-term erosion control, were impressively demonstrated.
